This 'wild woman' looking for others to join her pack

I think I have made a brief mention this book before here, Women Who Run With the Wolves, but it deserves a column of its own. At the beginning of the year I wrote about creating the life I want and being a wild woman. I got that term from this book. I vow to live closer to the wild this year and to connect with other women seeking that same life. Here is an excerpt from the book that is profoundly moving for me (and trust me, there are many more, as my incredibly highlighted copy can attest).

“To live as closely as possible to the numinous wild a woman must do more head tossing, more brimming, have more sniffling intuition, more creative life, more 'get down dirty,' more solitude, more women's company, more natural life, more fire, more spirit, more cooking of words and ideas. She must do more recognition of sorority, more seeding, more root stock-keeping, more kindness to men, more neighborhood revolution, more poetry, more painting of fables and facts, longer reaches into the wild feminine.”

Yes, this book is amazing and has value for every woman. Have you read it? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Through the myths and stories retold in this book and the commentary and deep insights offered by the author, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, I think you’ll find this book speaks deeply to your soul. I would also love to form a Women Who Run With the Wolves ‘pack’ (if you will) and meet monthly to discuss parts of this book and to talk about our path and how to reclaim our wildish selves, “that place where there is time and freedom to be, wander, wonder, write, sing, create, and not be afraid”. So, who’s with me?

  1. I'm with you Krista! Although I haven't read the book, it sounds fascinating and I did pick up a copy yesterday. Are there others who are interested in being part of your "pack"?

  2. Krista,
I have really enjoyed all your entries in Currant. I somehow feel like we are "kindred spirits"...especially after I read the enrty on the nose piercing,(I've been considering one),and then the most recent. I have not read this book but, based on your description, feel like I would and have already ordered it from Amazon!I am a stay-at-home Mom to 2 teenage boys. This, coupled with my age, 53, yikes!,has been leaving me feeling with something akin to wanderlust! I have plenty of ideas, now to implement them! Anyway,I would love to join a group if you have one, and in the mean time I will continue to look forward to your writing! My mail is ltqueen57@hotmail.com...need I say more?! Take care! Lisa Smith

Lisa, hello! Thank you for your comments! I love the phrase 'kindred spirit'. :) I will be sending an email here in the next few weeks and we'll get going!

If either of you have friends you also want to invite, that is wonderful. I will look forward to meeting you in person!

  5. Hello, Linda!! Thanks for your comment, welcome to Noblesville. We may live pretty close to each other (I am in 'Old Town' too).

  6. I've been meaning to respond to your article. I haven't read women who run with the wolves. I've read Carolyn Myss and Joan Borysenko though, maybe they are similar? I often feel like I am missing my tribe. I live on the west side of Noblesville, not in town, but close enough that I can enjoy it. Let me know if you are having a group together, maybe for coffee/tea, pastries/cookies. I'm a bookseller and a mom of 3 year old, I write, love traditional arts, cooking, and making music for fun. I had my master gardening certification for a while but you wouldn't know from my yard (spent a summer volunteering on organic farms too) I think we have a lot of other things in common too. Let me know and I'd love to hang out.

  8. Hello Lacie! Thanks for writing--yes, I think we have lots in common! That is a great idea about coffee and treats. Look for an email from me soon! Oh, I've heard of Joan Borynsenko and yes, I think it's similar.
Nancy, if you read this--I need your email address. :)

  9. Hi Krista, I love your articles in Currant as well and especially the two on making your own deodorant and joining your pack of women who wish to run with the wolves. I haven't read the book yet but am looking forward to it. I am 56 and lost my job a year ago and would love to connect with a group of women. I live east of St Rd 37 near 141 st street. I do fitness coaching in my home but am missing and needing to connect with a group of "wild women." My email address is njsmith753@yahoo.com. Look forward to hearing from you.
    Nancy
